Schuhtick - Crazy about shoes. Cold feet and hot soles.

We wear them every day. They both protect us and adorn us. And they reveal where and how we live and who we are. Shoes! But when did man invent the shoe and how has it developed over thousands of years? What do medieval poulaines have to do with the virility of the wearer? And why did Elvis Presley sing about blue suede shoes?

These and many other fascinating questions are answered in the international special exhibition " Schuhtick - Crazy about shoes. Cold feet and hot soles". The exhibition tells shoes stories which span history and cross continents: from the first foot protection to Roman military sandals and onward to designer shoes. The exhibition presents over 400 objects, some of which are on display for the very first time. Here you will have the opportunity to not only look at shoes, but also experience them for yourself. Try out on our catwalk how it feels to walk in medieval pattens or high heels, and listen to shoe songs that span rock and pop history at the "shoe bar".

And the shoes keep on walking! From the LWL Museum for Archaeology in Herne, they are stopping at the Übersee-Museum in Bremen and the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim to tell their shoe stories there, too.
